Trip Overview
These dynamic adventures use the power of a unique environment as the catalyst for teens to slow down, re-focus and move forward in their life’s journey. Participants will be met with challenges that encourage exploration of the power of choice, innovation, vision, ownership, and personal leadership. Breakwater Expeditions team of highly skilled professionals and wilderness guides carefully develop these exciting adventures to meet the needs of its participants.
Paddle along the evergreen cloaked coastlines of the Pacific Northwest’s San Juan Islands and be surrounded by snowcapped mountains in virtually every direction. Our destination will allow us to listen to the graceful blows of foraging porpoise passing by and watch as a bald eagle glides peacefully overhead against the evening sky. The San Juan Islands are the hidden gems of the Pacific Northwest because of the great weather, clear deep waters, clean and unpopulated beaches, and the abundance of wildlife within the inner network of Lopez and Orcas Island.

From there, we’ll head to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, where we’ll catch a ferry to Lopez Island for our first night of camping. This will be the perfect opportunity to get comfortable with your gear, meet new friends, and get to know your guides before we dive into the adventure!
Day 2:
After a delicious breakfast, we’ll organize our gear and boats before hitting the water! Once everyone feels ready, we’ll paddle off to the first island camp. It’s all about finding your rhythm on the water and having fun along the way!
Day 3-5:
Each day brings new adventures as we rise with the sun and set out for another island exploration! Expect to paddle between 4 to 8 miles each day, but we’ll make plenty of stops to explore hidden coves, beaches, and scenic spots along the way. Each afternoon, we’ll arrive at a new camp, where you’ll have time to relax, play games, and bond with your fellow adventurers. The trip adapts to what the group needs, whether that’s a quiet moment to unwind or some fun group challenges.
Day 6:
Today, we’ll paddle back toward Lopez Island and celebrate the journey of circumnavigating the San Juan Islands! After high-fives and lots of excitement, we’ll load into the vehicle and head back to Seattle, where a cozy Airbnb awaits. After showers and a hearty dinner, we’ll unwind and reflect on the unforgettable memories made along the way.
Day 7:
The final morning will be spent packing up and saying goodbyes. Our guides will help make sure everyone gets to their flights with ease before we wrap up an incredible week.
FAQS
What is the skill level required for this trip?
No prior experience in camping or sea kayaking is required. Our guides will teach you everything you need to know and ensure you're comfortable in the outdoors.
What gear is provided, and what do we need to bring?
Upon signing up, you'll receive a packing list with recommended personal clothing items for the experience.
Do you provide life jackets, kayaks, and camping gear?
Yes, we provide all the paddling gear you'll need for sea kayaking, as well as a personal camping system. This includes a tent (1-2, depending on family size), a sleeping bag, and a sleeping pad for each person.
What is the food situation on the trip?
Our guides are backcountry gourmet chefs! You'll enjoy delicious, home-cooked meals that can accommodate all dietary restrictions and food preferences. When you sign up, we'll ask about any dietary restrictions we should be aware of.
How physically demanding is the kayaking portion of the trip?
For most beginners, paddling can feel challenging at first, but as you practice, you'll get the hang of proper technique. You may feel some arm fatigue from paddling, but we use tandem kayaks, so the work is shared. The paddling distances are short, and we take breaks as needed. We recommend doing some rowing at the gym before the trip to prepare!
What kind of support can be expected in case of illness or injury?
Our guides are medically trained in wilderness medicine and carry a well-equipped first aid kit for everything from minor ailments like indigestion to more serious injuries. We recommend bringing over-the-counter medications you commonly use (e.g., ibuprofen, vitamins), but we have you covered for anything else. Emergency communication devices are also on hand in case additional medical support is needed.
